Jeffrey Daniel

Jeffrey Daniel popularised "the backslide" in the US, and was the first person to perform the dance on British TV during a performance of Shalamar's "A Night to Remember" on Top of the Pops. JD was a dance mentor, teacher and choreographer for Michael Jackson – teaching him many street dance moves including the backslide which Michael renamed as the Moonwalk, putting his own spin on the move.

Jeffrey Daniel is an acknowledged world-wide as a pioneer of the West coast Street dance movement. He took a style of dance from the streets and clubs to the mainstream music and media world. This saw a fusion of Jazz, Popping, Locking, Robotics, Waacking, House and Hip hop merged into what is seen every day in the entertainment industry – street dance.

Through his work on the popular TV show Soul Train, Jeffrey helped form the hit making funk group - Shalamar. They had a string of hits such as "A Night to Remember", "I Can Make You Feel Good", "There It Is", "Friends", “For The Lover in You”, “Take that to The Bank” and many others.

Jeffrey Daniel Bio (continued)

JD moved to London and was seen as a style icon with his ever-changing hair styles and unique dress sense and took on the role of 'Electra' in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new West End musical Starlight Express which involved wild costumes with complex choreography on roller skates. Also in 1984 Daniel appeared in the Paul McCartney movie Give My Regards to Broad Street which is where the Iconic lean – later featured in Smooth Criminal was introduced.

By 1987, Daniel was working full time with Michael Jackson who had always been a fan of Daniel's dance style since watching him on Soul Train and their subsequent friendship. He was hired as co-choreographer on the "Bad" and "Smooth Criminal" videos. He was later employed as a creative and choreography consultant on his world tours and the video Ghosts. Daniel's music and dance expertise was then employed when he became a consultant at the MJJ Productions record label. Living and working in LA allowed JD and Michael to interact on a regular basis, sharing dance work-outs and developing dance moves in a creative process in between videos.

Today Jeffrey Daniel works and lives in Lagos where he has been a judge on Nigerian Idol for several years and is developing his own TV dance show. He also has residencies in Osaka, Japan. He is a fluent speaker and writer of the Japanese language. He continues to perform as a solo artist and as a key member of Shalamar – along with Howard Hewett and Carolyn Griffey.
